Why Use a Professional Wedding Make-Up Artist?

Your special day is fast approaching. You’ve chosen your dress, flowers and accessories. Expenses are mounting and your Aunt Vera has offered to save you some dollars by doing the make-up for you – after all didn’t she do a smashing job for your 8th grade ballet recital?

Unlike a New Years Eve party, your wedding won’t come around again next year so this isn’t the time to experiment. Having said “I Do” – you don’t want to be saying “If Only….”

Professional Considerations

Unlike other occasions, a wedding day make-up is a delicate balance between looking beautiful on the day, fabulous in photographs and lasting the duration!

The natural excitement of the day, heat from your gown, and all the hugs and kisses from friends and family can leave you with a less than picture perfect face.

Special consideration is required for any black & white photography. What seems like a flattering shade of berry lipstick face to face, can leave you looking like “Elvira” in your photos. Take your shade too pale and you’ll look like a textbook case of “hypothermia”.

Another area that can be a minefield for the uninitiated, is color matching and contouring. With the correct product and skill, a professional Make-Up Artist can achieve uniformity to skin that may have uneven sun tan lines, changes in color from Solarium use, faux tan products, uneven pigmentation or blemishes.

A common ingredient in many foundations is Titanium Dioxide, and yet, while ordinarily flattering, photographically, can make the face appear several shades lighter than the rest of the body. Your Make-Up Artist should be experienced at balancing all of these competing concerns, knows the tricks and the products to give you perfect results.

How do I choose a Make-Up Artist?

Firstly you’ll need to either call or email the Artist and check availability. It’s not uncommon for Artists to have bookings up to 1 year in advance. Then check their price structure to see if it matches your budget. Be very specific, check if the price quoted includes all products, for example, some artists will charge extra for false eye lashes, body shimmers etc. There may be travel costs involved or different fees for Sunday/Public Holidays.

It is wise to ask if the artist is formally trained, what experience they have had professionally and view their portfolio of previous work. Book a pre-wedding trial to establish your desired result, how it wears and your rapport with the Artist.

Engaging a professional Make-Up Artist can insure your dream look and allow your Aunt Vera to enjoy your wedding as an honored guest!
